A Clear Mission: Giving the Gift of Sight

When Rotary Club members arrived at a Salvation Army center in Grand Bahama, they were greeted by a long line of people – some waiting for hours – for the chance to see more clearly.

Partnering with the Rosani Lens Project and Rotary Clubs in the Bahamas, members from Fleming Island, Green Cove Springs, Orange Park Sunrise, and Orange Park Noon traveled to Freeport in early February to provide free eye exams and glasses.

The Rosani Lens Project, started in 2019 by Dr. Benjamin Thomas, focuses on improving global access to vision care. According to the group, 150 million people need glasses to see properly.

From Feb. 4–9, the team offered simple eye tests and created customized glasses on-site. Rotary member Randy Robb said the experience is deeply rewarding, and every volunteer wants to return.

Patients 13 and older were tested using a vision chart and a portable eye machine. Based on their results, the team built custom glasses on the spot.

“It’s almost like a miracle,” Robb said, after seeing the immediate difference glasses made.

Robb from the Rotary Club of Fleming Island spearheaded the first trip in 2022. That year, they had 100 glasses and 40 readers—but far more people showed up. Since then, they’ve increased their supplies, but the need is still great.

In the Bahamas, the cost of glasses is high, and there are very few eye doctors. The island of Grand Bahama has only two optometrists. With no property or sales tax, most goods – including glasses – are imported and expensive.

Rotary member Rianna Barbary, an optometric technician, joined the trip for the first time this year. She was shocked to learn some people had never had an eye exam – even into their 40s or 50s.

“You don’t realize how life-changing a simple pair of glasses can be,” she said.

Sun exposure also adds to eye problems, making sunglasses a high-demand item.

Preston Mangus from the Fleming Island club said helping children is especially moving. Many have never seen a blackboard clearly, and the moment they put on glasses is emotional for everyone.

The Rotarians plan to return in February 2026, bringing even more frames and lenses to meet the growing demand.
