Rotary Club of New Smyrna Beach Marine Discovery Center Saltwater Treatment Project
Impact and focus of the Project.
This project supports the environment through conservation, education, and water sanitation.
Beneficiaries
Conservation – Eliminate Currently filtered ocean water delivered to MDC costs annually ~ $15,200.00. The Project Cost $20000 with a payback of 14 Months
Education – This natural and commercial filtration area will be covered and part of MDC’s experience to guests to follow the journey of water and explain to them the conservation steps that MDC is taking to help preserve the Indian River Lagoon ecosystem through water conservation.
Water sanitation – Capture water from the Indian River Lagoon, run it through additional filtration, and store it for use in the aquarium area.
Reduction in carbon Footprint – Currently, a boat must travel 5 miles offshore and back to pump water. Then, that water is transferred to a truck that drives to a holding facility, where it is pumped into a holding tank and filtered. With this project, we eliminate that and get our water right here from the Lagoon. Total Fuel used: 2.2 Barrels of oil equivalent. CO2 impact 12t carbon equivalent.
